This map shows the current IGS Reference Frame (RF) stations used since GPS week
1709 (07 Oct 2012). This Reference Frame, called IGb08, is a minor update of the
previous IGS08. Its purpose is to restore as RF stations some of the many IGS08
stations that had become unusable for operational reference frame alignments due
to position discontinuities.
This IGS08 set of stations had been selected by the IGS Reference Frame Working Group (RFWG) for the IGS realization of the latest International Terrestrial Reference Frame release (ITRF2008). The main selection criteria were station performance, track record, monumentation, collocation and geographical distribution. At every update of the RF realization, the number of stations selected has increased, in order to improve the overall quality of the RF realization, and thus all the IGS products that depend on it. The consistency and stability of the IGS products, as well as the ability to link measurements across space and time, depends critically upon those RF stations. As such, there are physical and operational guidelines noted as being particularly important for RF stations. Well-behaved coordinate/residual time series are an important indicator of individual station contribution to the frame realization stability. The special responsibility and effort of the agencies operating these stations is acknowledged by the IGS and its users.
For more information on IGb08, see IGSMails 6663, 6354, 6355, 6356, and this article. A machine-readable list of the IGb08 stations' 4-character ID is available.
